Tiago’s Story

Location: Bogotá

Yadira Quintero, 40 years old, is the mother of Tiago Matías Vargas Quintero. They reside in the Castilla sector of Bogotá. She serves as the primary caregiver and permanent companion in her son’s care and rehabilitation process, maintaining a constant commitment to activities aimed at fostering his physical and functional development.

Tiago Matías is a 6-year-old boy diagnosed with spastic cerebral palsy. He measures approximately one meter in height and weighs 15 kilograms. His health condition is associated with highly complex perinatal history, including umbilical cord entanglement, premature birth at 35 weeks of gestation via cesarean section, a birth weight of 2,600 grams, and a height of 48 centimeters. He subsequently required a 15-day hospitalization, with oxygen support and a blood transfusion, due to complications arising from cerebral hypoxia.

These conditions caused impairments in his neurodevelopment, manifesting as delays in motor development milestones and significant limitations in his mobility and postural control. Currently, Tiago requires continuous stimulation processes and exercises focused on strengthening muscles, improving body posture, and preventing musculoskeletal complications.

His mother reports that she consistently performs therapeutic exercises and activities at home learned during her accompaniment process, including Vojta-type therapies, exercises on a therapeutic ball, lower limb stimulation, tummy time positioning, and attempts at standing. She also expresses concern about possible hip dysplasia and the presence of a cross pattern in his movements, which is why she strives to keep him active and avoid long periods of immobility.

Currently, the child is affiliated with the subsidized health regime and has medical follow-up, as well as access to therapeutic processes through his EPS (health provider). His mother maintains a proactive attitude toward the rehabilitation process, showing permanent willingness to learn and apply strategies that contribute to Tiago’s well-being and functional progress.

The family dynamics evidence significant dedication on the part of the mother, who focuses her efforts on promoting better development conditions for her son, maintaining positive expectations regarding his progress and opportunities that may strengthen his quality of life.
