Jana's Story

Living Location: Cartagena, Colombia

Jana Lucía is a 5-year-old girl who lives in Cartagena with her family, who every day face with love, effort, and hope the challenges brought by her health condition.

Her story began very early on. Jana was born premature, at just 27 weeks of gestation, so from her very first days of life she needed to remain in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). At 21 days old, while she was hospitalized, she contracted a bacteria that severely complicated her health status and caused her to suffer two cardiac arrests.

As a result of this situation, Jana experienced neurological damage that later led to the diagnosis of microcephaly and cerebral palsy, conditions that completely transformed her family’s life.

Since then, her mother has dedicated her life entirely to her daughter’s care and well-being. At home, they perform stimulation exercises, rehabilitation activities, and communication exercises, seeking to gradually strengthen her abilities and improve her quality of life.

The family lives in Cartagena under limited economic conditions. Her mother is a homemaker, and although resources are scarce, they have never stopped fighting to give Jana the best possible opportunities. Every small milestone represents a great victory for them.

Today, the family dreams of being able to further strengthen Jana’s rehabilitation process through an at-home rehabilitation gym, a tool that would allow her to receive therapies more constantly, safely, and adapted to her needs.

Her mother expresses that Jana needs more rehabilitation opportunities to continue moving forward and to improve her physical and emotional well-being. Despite all the difficulties they have experienced, they continue to believe in hope, love, and the possibility of building a better future for her.
