Beneficiary: Sharlot Sofía Villarreal Villarreal
Age: 9 years old
Diagnosis: Cerebral palsy, epilepsy, and psychomotor retardation
Sharlot Sofía came into the world apparently healthy, filling her family’s hearts with hope. However, just six days after her birth, a struggle began that would change their lives forever.
His mother noticed that her skin and eyes had turned an intense yellow color. Upon going immediately to a medical center, tests revealed that Sharlot had extremely high bilirubin levels, a condition that put her life at risk. She was urgently admitted to the Intensive Care Unit, where she remained for 18 days, requiring specialized management, a blood transfusion, and multiple medical cares.
Although she managed to overcome that difficult beginning, the consequences began to become evident as the months went by. At eight months of age, her family observed that her development was not progressing like that of other children her age. After new assessments and hospitalizations, she began a long process of physical, occupational, and speech therapies, accompanied by permanent monitoring by different specialists.
Over the years, Sharlot has faced new challenges. At the age of five, she underwent a complex surgery to correct hip dysplasia, remaining immobilized for several months. More recently, she received a diagnosis of epilepsy, a condition that adds to the challenges she faces daily.
Despite everything, her family has never stopped believing in her.
Every day at home, her mother performs stretching exercises on her arms and legs, while her sister turns rehabilitation walks and exercises into moments of play, affection, and motivation. These are small daily efforts that reflect the enormous love with which they accompany every step Sharlot takes.
Today, the family dreams of providing her with a better opportunity to continue her rehabilitation process.
The Home Rehabilitation Gym will allow Sharlot to perform her therapies daily from home, with a proper and safe posture, promoting her mobility, muscle strengthening, and functional development. Furthermore, it will help ensure that her therapeutic process is not interrupted and will open up new possibilities for her to continue advancing toward greater independence.
Her mother maintains the hope of seeing her progress every day and trusts that, with the right support and the solidarity of many people, Sharlot will be able to build a future with more opportunities and a better quality of life.
