Shadia's Story

Living Location: Buenaventura

Sofía was born on November 30, 2015. One day earlier, on November 29, her mother was admitted to the clinic due to severe pain. Sofía had not yet completed six months of gestation; however, due to preeclampsia in her mother, it was necessary to bring the delivery forward to safeguard the lives of both.
Despite her premature birth, Sofía was able to leave the clinic a few days later in the company of her parents, who began this new stage with love and hope. However, months later, Sofía developed a cold that quickly became complicated, resulting in severe pneumonia.
Due to the complexity of her health condition, she was transferred to the city of Cali to receive specialized medical care. There, she remained for several months in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), facing multiple challenges. During her hospitalization, she contracted a bacterium that worsened her condition, leading doctors to perform a pulmonary lobectomy to preserve her life.
Subsequently, it was necessary to perform a tracheostomy to facilitate her breathing and a gastrostomy to ensure her proper nutrition. After a long and difficult medical process, Sofía was diagnosed with cerebral palsy, a condition that would change the course of her life and that of her family.
Despite the challenges, Sofía is a girl who fights day by day, surrounded by the unconditional love of her parents. Her story is a reflection of strength, resilience, and hope, and today she continues in rehabilitation processes that seek to improve her quality of life and provide her with new opportunities for development.
Her path has not been easy, but with the right support, therapeutic accompaniment, and her family’s commitment, Sofía continues to show that every small progress is a great victory.
