Valeria's Story

Living Location: Bogotá D.C

Valeria was born via emergency at the Hospital Policlínico del Olaya. At birth, she did not present any disability or known genetic history that could affect her neurological development.
At 24 hours old, she was transferred to the Clínica Shaio due to tachycardia, in order to receive specialized medical attention. Upon arriving at the clinic, she remained inside the ambulance for approximately 27 minutes without receiving the required care. According to reports, a doctor stated that the patient was not purple, red, or blue and could wait to be seen.
While waiting for the medical evaluation, Valeria suffered a cardiorespiratory arrest. Only after this emergency occurred were resuscitation maneuvers initiated, which lasted approximately 22 minutes.
As a consequence of this event, Valeria suffered a brain injury due to lack of oxygen. Over the years, she began to present significant neurological consequences that permanently affected her health and development.
Subsequently, multiple medical evaluations, specialized studies, and genetic tests were performed. The results ruled out that Valeria’s conditions were of genetic or congenital origin. Specialists concluded that the neurological consequences were related to the brain damage caused by the cardiorespiratory arrest and the lack of oxygen suffered during that event.
Currently, Valeria presents cerebral palsy, microcephaly, and unspecified focal epilepsy, conditions that have caused a permanent disability and have significantly impacted her quality of life and that of her family.
Due to the above, it is considered that there is a relationship between the events that occurred during the medical care Valeria received as a newborn and the permanent disabilities she presents today.
My daughter, Valeria Vergel, needs access to the gym as part of her rehabilitation process, as this activity contributes to improving her quality of life, physical well-being, and comprehensive development.
